Minion by L. A. Banks

weigh in, week 16: -1 pound
total weight lost: -16.2 pounds

Finally a review for Minion by L. A. Banks. To call this book "Buffy meets Blade" gives you an idea of the direction of the book, but it really doesn't do it justice. The main character is Damali Richards, a spoken word artist who records with Warriors of Light Records. The recording business is just a cover for the Guardians, a world wide group who battles evil. Damali is a neteru, a vampire huntress, someone who is born to battle evil and join humanity together in peace. Her nemesis is Fallon Nuit, rogue master vampire and owner of Blood Records, a rival business to Warriors of Light.

The reader learns a bit about the history of the Guardians and Damali's powers right along with Damali. The plot has twists and turns and the action is fast paced. The main characters' personalities are well thought out and illustrated, but the physical descriptions are a bit sparse. There is also a minor inconsistency in time in regard to one of the characters. This character is not born yet at the beginning of the book when Damali is an infant, yet later in the book a comment is made that makes it seem that this same character is several years older than Damali. I understand that I read a revised version of the novel and it has a new beginning that tells more back story, so the timing error just may have been overlooked in the editing process. Really it doesn't hurt the story and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment, but it was one of those details that made me stop and re-read the same passage and then go back to the beginning to re-read the prologue to make sure I didn't misread or just plain miss something.

All in all, the book was enjoyable and it does end on a cliff hanger, so make sure you buy the second book "The Awakening" when you get the first. I look forward to reading more in this series.
